Guestbook Archive

I have had to change guestbook services, due to some people who can't be courteous. Like with email, guestbooks are susceptible to spam and this one has been no exception.

I decided to archive past guestbook messages and create another guestbook which allows me to preview messages before they appear in the guestbook. This way, I can trust that inappropriate message don't get through before I can delete them.

Please leave me a message in the new guestbook and enjoy these archived messages.

It was so fun to hear this story again, I have it in a story written by Gennevieve Merrill Russell and it is abour Phoebe Odel Merrill who is my 5th Gr. Grandmother. I have heard it was written in a bible that was handed down and is somewhere in Flint Michigan. Thanks Cheryl Waterfall

My job has me doing much travel via auto, and I have been listening to many books on Lincoln and Civil War history. In one of these books, I learned that Stephen Douglas had one of the most common diseases known to mankind, a disease that I too have - alcoholism. Being in recovery is great, and the unfortunate thing is prior to 1935, people with this disease were often scorned, and had little hope. While the common biographies of Douglas say he died of pneumonia, the thing that drove his body to such a final state, where pneumonia became the 28th angel, and took him silently, the real culprit was cirrhosis of the liver. It is a shame that these biographies hide the truth. Within one of the books I read, there were words to the effect "Stephen Douglas worked hard and drank hard." The man was obviously a tremendous achiever, and his disease should be known, to help those under the wraps of alcoholism.

Beautiful Site and wonderful Memories. So many families I recognize from my years in Hancock/Stephentown/West Stephentown. It is a wonderful thing to be able to look back and see our history. This is one of the most beautiful areas in New England. My Dad and Mom; Ed and Ruth O'Donnell; and Grandma Coons; would have loved to see this; especially Dad; as he loved looking at the historical info he could find, So many friends and acquaintances through the years surely made this an enjoyable adventure for me. I now reside in Kentucky. similar countryside, with less snow and cold. My best to you all, and my compliments to the ones who made this site possible.

What a wonderful web site, you have done a great job. I came here because my ancestors Sarah Southwick & Jonathan Pierce were married here in Stephentown, NY. Sarah Southwick is a descendant of Resolved white who came over on the Mayflower with his parents, William & Susanna White. I can't find any time period of them living in Stephentown, but that's the information I have. You had a very good site here, lot of information and facts.

Hi again....just a change: Jonas Odele I, his father was named Jackson Odele, rather than Jenkin.....both Jackson and his wife, Hannah, were listed as having born in Stephenstown, NY in 1703.

Janis Rozich - Mon Jul 4 06:46:46 2005
Hello......my grandmother/grandfather...several times removed...lived in Stephentown in 1790...Jonas Odel (Odle) was listed in the first Federal Census of 1790. His wife was named Betsey Weaver. I understand she was born in Utica, NY. Their youngest son was named Jonas Odel (or Odle) Jr., born in 1804. They moved to Michigan (probably per the Erie Canal, and are buried somewhere in Utica, Michigan. I live in Michigan, as well. My understanding is that Jonas Sr (II) father's name was Jonas, as well....and that his father was named Jenkin Odle (wife Hannah) and that they (the parents) were murdered by Natives and Jonas and his two younger sisters were taken by the Natives. Jonas I was able to escape, but the two younger sisters were never seen again. I also have learned that Jonas I changed the spelling of the last name to disavow himeself from family members who were loyalists during the American Revolution. So, the name could have originally been spelled: O'Dell or Odel or Odle....the final spelling is Odle. My grandmother was Mable Ruth Odle. Hope to hear from you.

Bob Whitegiver - Thu Mar 17 13:08:26 2005
Tina, have you ever thought of broadening the site to include all 5 of the Lebanons? There is a lot of history associated with West Lebanon and Lebanon Center. I grew up in West Lebanon in a house that was built in 1820, Originally a stage coach stop on the Boston to Albany post road.

Your stephentowngenealogy.com site is incredible. I can't believe how much material you have on it. I've only opened a few of the files, but I am awestruck at the sheer volume of info that you've accumulated and displayed. With the exception of our "Living Gravestones" card file and cemetery file, you seem to have more info than we do in many areas. Congratulations.

Children of Amos Spencer and his first three wives were said to have journeyed to Stephentown to live with the twin sisters (Elinor & Audra) of Amoss first wife Mercy Spencer Spencer. The twins had married Carr brothers. Later David F. Spencer can be found living there (1830 census) near his brothers and relatives before he moved to Herkimer Co. then Fulton Co., Ohio -Fayette Village in 1845 where he lived out his life. He named my gr. Grandfather Rensellaer H. Spencer b. 1840. and my father was named Edward Rensselaer Spencer by his father Charles H. Spencer of Fayette. I am searching for Davids second wife B. NY. 1811 Sarah who is buried beside him in Fayette. Flora Clark genealogist has errors in Davids entry, but she found his final home. WS

Great web site! My husband's family has roots in town, Wait, Garvey, Turner, Coleman. I have been researching the family a little at a time for my children to have. The family still has property in the Alps, on Black Pond, that the whole family frequents often. Supposedly Horse Haven Road got it's name from a great grandfather, John Wait. I don't know if this is fact or fiction. I have some pictures I will have posted at a later date. Keep up the good work!!!
